About Ichiyo Pittsburgh Chapter

The Ichiyo Pittsburgh Chapter seeks to share the Ichiyo style of ikebana in the greater Pittsburgh region through workshops, private lessons, demonstrations, and exhibits, including exhibiting every year at the fall and spring flower shows at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Garden.

Ichiyo students learn to interpret and feel the beauty of nature in their ikebana arrangements in a way that is unexpected, stimulating, and profound. We learn to see beauty in nature even if it is imperfect like a bug-eaten leaf, and flowers and branches that are impermanent as seasons change.

A certificate-based method of teaching by certified instructors allows students to enjoy creative ikebana and progress in a relatively short time. There are six certificates of twenty lessons each to study to become an Instructor in Ichiyo School.

The Pittsburgh Ichiyo Chapter was founded in 1975 by Executive Master and President Emeritus, Shirley Winkler.
